This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Mecklenburg County Maintenance Unit. This position is a roadway maintenance crew supervisor responsible for overseeing a team that maintains and repairs state-maintained roads in Mecklenburg County. The job involves directing daily maintenance activities such as pavement patching, drainage and shoulder repair, vegetation control, and upkeep of both paved and unpaved roads. The supervisor ensures safe work practices around traffic, heavy equipment, and power tools, interprets work plans, allocates labor and materials, documents daily operations, and responds to emergencies including snow, ice, and storm events. The position requires working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain, and nights or weekends as needed. It also includes interacting with the public, maintaining required certifications, and occasionally performing heavy lifting. Work includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needs to complete assigned maintenance tasks within a given budget. Employee is responsible for making appropriate adjustments to plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, and attending trainings. Safety toe shoes are required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade: NC14: Salary Range: $52,592 - $92,036 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as maintenance equipment operation Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience.
