Title: Director of Transportation
Reports To: Superintendent
Purpose: Direct and manage district transportation operations to ensure safe, efficient student transport and proper maintenance of all district vehicles.
Qualifications:
Clear and valid Kansas commercial drivers license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of fleet operations, vehicle maintenance, and repair, including the ability to inspect and ensure quality of work
Ability to manage transportation operations, including budgeting, personnel, and implementation of policies and procedures
Ability to use technology and data to plan, monitor, evaluate, and improve transportation services
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to meet U.S. Department of Transportation requirements, including drug/alcohol testing and physical examinations
Essential Job Functions:
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Oversee daily student transportation to ensure safe, timely service, including routing, scheduling, and communication of changes
2. Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs
3. Supervise transportation staff, including hiring, training, assignments, evaluations, and discipline
4. Manage fleet operations, including vehicle maintenance, repairs, fuel, inventory, and replacement planning
5. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and district policies, including safety standards, driver certifications, and testing requirements
6. Maintain required records, reports, payroll, and documentation
7. Develop and manage the transportation budget; approve purchases and monitor expenditures
8. Enforce student behavior expectations and address discipline issues
9. Investigate accidents, incidents, and concerns; implement corrective actions
10. Monitor road and weather conditions and advise on delays, closures, and emergency situations
11. Conduct staff training and promote a safe work environment
12. Communicate with staff, administration, and the public; present information as needed
13. Operate a bus as needed
14. Other duties as assigned
Mental Demands/Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
Ability to work under stress and maintain emotional control
Frequent irregular hours and districtwide and occasionally statewide travel
Regular driving of district vehicles and use of office equipment.
Physical activity, including standing, heavy lifting, and working indoors/outdoors in varying weather conditions
Requires the ability to work and concentrate in noisy and crowded environments.
