Abilene, USD #435 is seeking an individual who will direct the school district's transportation efforts.
The successful candidate will regularly maintain a safe transportation system and assist in transportation matters to include coordination of bus drivers’ assignments, schedules, routes, activity trips and vehicles to provide safe and efficient pupil transportation services. The Transportation Director is also responsible for the maintenance of all district vehicles.
The Transportation Director will work closely with the district's Athletic Director, building administrators, superintendent, board clerk, and bus drivers to ensure the students and staff are provided quality transportation for district activities.
The position is a classified, exempt, full-time, 12-month position. Regular attendance at work is necessary to oversee the transportation operations.
The successful candidate will work a minimum of 8 hours per day with leave benefits as detailed in the Classified Handbook.
Typical Work Hours : 6:00 am to 11:00 am for the morning routes.
1:30 pm to 4:30 pm for the afternoon routes.
Non-typical work hours as needed to complete job duties outlined in the job descriptions that might include the following: address oversight of bus routes, activity routes, communication, transportation department documentation, fleet maintenance, fleet repairs, and weather-related considerations.
Summer Work Hours: Align with the District Office schedule.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Post-Secondary Training Preferred.
- Must have or acquire a Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, first aid, and defensive driving.
- Basic Vehicle Maintenance Knowledge
- Computer experience required with knowledge of Microsoft programs.
- Strong customer service skills
- Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the District Office (after employment offer is made).
- Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to efficiently operate the school district transportation department.

- Ability to operate all vehicles, equipment and software appropriately as necessary.

- Ability to schedule appointments, make travel arrangements, and assemble materials for meetings for the purpose of ensuring that activities run smoothly.
- Ability to schedule and organize school transportation safety meetings.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to remain in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional work environment.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
- Requires extended sitting, standing, stooping, bending, turning and reaching during the use of equipment includes repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue.
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 35 to 50 pounds.
- Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
- Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
- Must occasionally work in a noisy and crowded environment, with numerous interruptions.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks at one time efficiently and courteously.
General Responsibilities:
Organization and Communication
- Ability to schedule transportation routes and evaluate routes regularly.
- Ability to communicate routes with parents, bus drivers, and administration.
- Ability to oversee and schedule extracurricular transportation.
- Ability to ensure routing of buses and make sure routes and stops are safe.
- Ability to assign activity trip to bus drivers.
- Ability to process parent concerns regarding transportation.
- Ability to enter information into School Information System for each child that rides a bus that includes the bus number, student pick-up and drop-off addresses, and/or daycare information.
- Ability to hire and evaluate transportation staff.
Safety Considerations
- Ability to communicate discipline problems on buses to building administrators.
- Ability to oversee two emergency bus evacuation per ear for each bus.
- Ability to address emergency situations such as lost children or broken-down buses.
- Ability to schedule CPR, First Aid, and defensive driving classes for drivers.
- Ability to have knowledge of state regulations for the operation of school vehicles and enforce these regulations.
- Ability to review records to ensure all drivers continue to meet state requirements.
- Ability to plan and be in charge of ten drivers’ safety meetings per year.
- Ability to oversee and participate in preparations for state Highway Patrol inspections.
- Ability to organize all records are filed and saved for state audits.
Oversee Maintenance of Fleet
- Ability to fix lights, belts, and make small adjustments on vehicles.
- Ability to change oil and grease and rotate tires on all vehicles.
- Ability to oversee maintenance schedules and bus repairs.
- Ability to clean inside and outside of all district vehicles.
- Ability to fuel vehicles for trips.
- Ability to make sure vehicles are in good mechanical condition and tires are inflated and have proper tread depth.
- Ability to prepare specifications for the purchase of vehicles.
- Ability to organize transportation records to recommend capital outlay purchasing.
General Tasks
- Ability to assist in promoting the safety, health, and comfort of students and employees in transportation vehicles.
- Ability to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all vehicles.
- Ability to work when emergencies arise to prevent disruption of the schools.
- Ability to act as a substitute bus driver when necessary.
- Ability to always observe and follow all school district policies.
- Keep current on new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
- Ability to respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
- Ability to keep information and records confidential.
- Ability to implement and follow all District Health and Safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Ability to perform other duties and assume other responsibilities assigned by the administration
