PURPOSE OF ROLE:

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in verifying and keeping records on incoming and outgoing shipments, storage, and preparing items for shipment; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Interviewing, hiring, and training employees in the Shipping/Receiving dept.
  • Planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems of the Shipping/Receiving dept. (includes Shipping/Receiving Office on 1st shift).
  • Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
  • Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Performs activities of workers supervised.
  • Interfaces with others in the organization to ensure customer deadlines are met.
  • Ensure all guidelines, procedures and checklists are being utilized
  • Studies shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, orders, and other records to determine shipping priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods required to meet shipping and receiving schedules.
  • Oversees incoming and outgoing shipping activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, condition of shipments, and movement of material.
  • Determines space requirements and position of shipment in boxcars and trucks and lays out position of shipment.
  • Determines legal load limits of trucks according to established schedules and weight limits of states.
  • Inspects loading operations to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, and seals loaded boxcars and truck doors.
  • Inspects material handling equipment for defects and notifies maintenance personnel
  • Directs movement of shipments from shipping and receiving platform to storage and work areas.
  • Issues written and oral instructions.
  • Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency of subordinates.
  • Adjusts errors and complaints.
  • Utilize proper equipment for unloading/loading of material.
  • Responsible for ensuring all inbound paperwork is accurate and has the correct documentation before submitting to inventory department for entry.
  • Maintain methods for performing verification of count and condition of material upon receipt at the warehouse and prior to dispatch from the warehouse
  • Maintain methods for performing segregation and labeling of damaged product.
  • Responsible for double checking outbound shipments
  • Perform physical inventory and verification of condition of product as requested by the inventory department and/or customer.
  • Follow all ISO requirements; this includes but is not limited to being held responsible for completion of 'CAR' reports and submitting processing information when problem issues occur with damaged product, lost product or other issues.
  • Initiate and identify PARs and CARs
  • Investigator for all CARs issued to shipping/receiving department
  • Ensure all ISO documentation is current and adhered to; Assist quality department with all necessary document revisions
  • Ensure department meets OSHA safety standards
  • Arranges for cardboard disposal that is accumulated by the facility
  • Manage cleanliness of department and grounds
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE / QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Minimum of 3 years forklift experience combined with a minimum of 3 years shipping/receiving experience, including supervisor experience.
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong leadership and people skills. Results oriented with solid communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Inventory software; Order processing systems; Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
