Material Handler Job Description The Material Handler safely loads, unloads, moves, and stages materials to support production, shipping, and warehousing operations. This role verifies material accuracy, performs basic quality checks, operates material handling equipment, and maintains clean, organized work areas to ensure an efficient and safe material flow throughout the facility. Responsibilities Load and unload materials, products, and supplies from trucks, trailers, and production areas in a safe and timely manner. Stage, move, and distribute materials to the appropriate departments based on production schedules and work orders. Verify material quantities, product identification, and order accuracy before releasing materials to production or shipping. Perform visual inspections of raw materials and finished goods, and remove damaged or non-conforming materials as needed. Doff packages and handle rolls, fiber, and packaging materials according to department requirements. Maintain accurate knowledge of tube cores, packaging materials, raw stock areas, and finished goods locations to support efficient material flow. Operate material handling equipment such as manual carts, pallet jacks, and forklifts (if certified) in accordance with safety guidelines. Support multiple departments, including Production, Lamination, Shipping, Maintenance, and Warehousing, by responding to material requests and priorities. Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in all material handling zones, including aisles, staging areas, and storage locations. Read and interpret production schedules, work orders, and loading documentation to plan and prioritize material movements. Follow all lock-out/tag-out procedures and safety protocols when working around or near production equipment and moving machinery. Report unsafe conditions, damaged inventory, or equipment issues to leadership immediately so that corrective actions can be taken. Communicate effectively with team members and leadership to coordinate material deliveries, pickups, and inventory needs. Assist with inventory counts, tracking, and basic material documentation to support accurate inventory records. Complete assigned work orders on time, aiming to achieve at least 95% on-time completion. Help ensure that preventive maintenance tasks related to material handling equipment are completed as scheduled. Maintain a strong safety record, striving for zero safety incidents or near misses each month. Arrive each day with all required tools and equipment in ready-to-use condition. Perform other related duties as assigned to support overall plant operations. Essential Skills High school diploma or GED required. Ability to read, write, and interpret work instructions and documents. Ability to perform basic math functions for counts, measures, and inventory checks. Ability to lift up to 80 pounds on a regular basis. Strong attention to detail when verifying materials and inspecting products. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Strong commitment to safety and adherence to established safety procedures. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Comfort working in hot, noisy, or physically demanding environments. Minimum 6 months of hands-on mechanical experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting. Basic knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills related to materials and equipment. Basic computer and math skills to support documentation and inventory activities. Additional Skills & Qualifications Forklift certification preferred, or the ability to obtain certification. Experience in general labor, production, or quality control environments. Experience supporting multiple departments such as Production, Shipping, Maintenance, or Warehousing. Ability to remain organized and focused while managing multiple material requests. Team members work on and around uneven surfaces, ramps, stairs, and industrial flooring while using material handling equipment such as manual carts, pallet jacks, and forklifts (if certified). Safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out, are an integral part of daily operations, and appropriate work attire is expected to support a safe and efficient industrial setting.
