Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Transportation serves as a key leader in the district's operational infrastructure. This role is responsible for assisting the Director in managing the logistical, personnel, and safety requirements of a large-scale student transportation fleet. The primary goal is to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely transportation of students while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations & Logistics Management
- Oversee daily dispatching operations to ensure 100% route coverage and minimal service disruptions.
- Utilize advanced routing software to analyze and optimize routes for regular and special education services.
- Manage the integration of technology, including GPS tracking and parent notification platforms.
- Personnel Leadership & Development
- Supervise a large team of bus drivers, monitors, mechanics, and administrative support staff.
- Assist in the recruitment, interview, and onboarding process to maintain full staffing levels.
- Coordinate ongoing professional development and safety training programs for all staff.
- Assist with customer service support, including handling questions or concerns.
- Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to DOT, state, and local safety regulations and drug/alcohol testing programs.
- Lead accident investigations, determine preventability, and implement corrective action plans.
- Oversee the district's driver certification program and maintenance of training records.
- Fleet & Financial Management
- Collaborate with the Shop Head Mechanic to oversee preventative maintenance and life-cycle replacement of vehicles.
- Assist in the development and monitoring of the department's annual multi-million dollar budget.
- Assist with fuel procurement, parts inventory, and vendor relationships.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum 5 years in transportation/logistics with 3+ years in a supervisory role.
Licensure: Must hold or be able to obtain a Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School (S) endorsements.
Working Conditions
- Requires early morning availability and occasional evening/weekend duties for emergencies or events.
- Environment includes office settings, mechanical shops, and outdoor field supervision in varying weather.
